Magnificent Monuments
The sandstone sculptural group, “Old Mortality” has been greeting visitors and established the cemetery’s status as an outdoor sculpture garden since 1837. Look beyond this impressive work and you will find many other breathtaking and unique monuments, some of which were exhibited as artworks, before they found their eternal home on our grounds. Who were the people that wanted to be immortalized by such monuments? Who were the sculptors that created them? Funerary art can be a reflection of the departed or the times they lived. On this tour we will showcase Laurel Hill East as both a sculpture garden and a place of remembrance.
