All are welcome to drop into Laurel Hill’s monthly book club discussions.

In July we’ll meet online to discuss The Wager: A Tale of Shipwreck, Mutiny and Murder.

A work of narrative nonfiction from #1 New York Times bestselling author David Grann, The Wager begins with the 18th-century shipwreck of a British imperial vessel on an island near Patagonia. Thirty surviving sailors washed up on the coast of Brazil, with a harrowing story of survival and heroism.

Six months later, another battered vessel came ashore, in Chile — and the three castaways on this second boat proclaimed that the men who landed in Brazil were not the brave and honorable men they pretended to be, but murderers and mutineers. What unfolds is a page-turning tale of maritime scandal, court-martial testimony, and an investigation into the nature of truth and complicity with empire.
