I Have a Cure for That!
Philadelphians, like most everybody else in 19th century America, lived in a constant state of indigestion. Bad food, an unsanitary public health environment, and no remedy for disease all added up to a stomach in revolt. Add in a general mistrust of actual doctors (the treatment often being worse than the disease) and it was easy enough for entrepreneurs to call themselves “doctors” and promise cure-alls, good for everything and everybody. Laurel Hill has some of both, and one who was the best at playing the game.
